When it comes to emotional barriers and hang-ups, I was the role model. (But only if you could find where I was hiding!)

Wake-up call from milk-guzzling friends

But then came 1988. That was when I found myself living in Washington D.C. Married with four kids, life was tough. Trying to pay off student loans while coping with the high cost of living, we were barely making it.

One day, things came to a head. Since we couldn't afford to go out, we made do playing games with friends and a enjoying a treat together. Only this time our friends decided that the brownies we served them needed more than one glass of milk. They kept going into the kitchen and helping themselves to one glass of milk after another-until our only gallon was gone.

After they'd left, I broke down in sobs. We couldn't afford to buy another gallon until next week.

Things had to change. Shyness or no shyness, I desperately began trying to make money at home: from piano lessons to network marketing. Nothing worked. I never made more than $300 from any business adventure I went on.

Ideas that "kept him up at night"

Then out of the blue, my father called. He invited us to come home for Christmas, casually offering to buy airline tickets for all of us. Curiously, he then announced he had two new ideas he wanted to share with us. Ideas that were so exciting they "kept him up at night." Of course, I begged him to tell me right there and then. He wouldn't budge. I had to wait.

So what did I do when I finally arrived at my parent's home? I dropped my suitcase in the doorway and yelled, "TELL ME!"

He started jabbering on about how he'd hired someone called a "life coach." Someone who had coached him into writing something called a "creed." And how all his goals were now coming to fruition.

As if it had already happened?

By now, the blank stare on my face told him, "I'm not getting this!" I then blurted out, "Dad, you're too old to play sports!" After rolling his eyes, he started from the beginning. He told me how he had hired a man called Leo Weidner, a protégé of none other than Napoleon Hill. (You know, the man who wrote the book, "Think and Grow Rich," the Bible for almost all personal development gurus.)

My dad then went on to describe what this "creed" business was all about. He told me it was a little like a personal mission statement. Except, it was written in "first person, present tense"-as if it had already happened!

All well and good. But what where the results? He told me that he'd had an incredible experience so far. He was accomplishing his dreams much faster than he thought possible.

I was all ears

I still wasn't getting it. So he patiently handed me a report, saying that it would explain everything.

Then he announced his second "revelation." (A revelation that ultimately turned out to be a turning point.) It was a new business idea that a mutual friend had had much success with. Recalling me own business experience, I thought, "Uh Oh. Here we go again." But then he mentioned that his friend had made $30,000 in the month of November. Suddenly, I was all ears.

It turned out that the business was about marketing "Wassail Mix," the hot orange, lemon and spice drink. You packaged the mix in a cute Christmas plaid bag, complete with a bow, gift card and cinnamon stick. Then you sold them at craft shows for around $5.00 each.

A powerful suggestion

My dad nonchalantly suggested that I could do the business myself. Based on his friend's experience, he stated that I could sell hundreds! (Had he forgotten all about my shy, solitary nature?)

But then he made a powerful suggestion, one that kept me up all night: "Why don't you take this idea of selling Wassail Mixes, combine it with this new goal-setting method... and see what happens to you financially?"

And so I began. I followed the detailed instructions in the report, writing down my goals in each section of my ideal life. All of them written "as if" I'd already accomplished them.

At first, it was strange writing about something in the future as if it's happening right now. But I pressed on. Then I came to the financial section. I wrote,

"I have a Wassail business! In November and December of 1989, I make
$20,000. I'm doing this by selling 2,000 bags of wassail at six craft shows. Every
Monday, Wednesday and Friday-from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.-I make the necessary
phone calls and the preparations to accomplish this task."

(And yes, I had no idea what was involved in running a wassail business!)

I then was told to record what I'd written onto a cassette tape. Not only that, I must also record it with Baroque music playing in the background. Then I must listen to it- every day.

"Get real Ann...$20,000 in a single month?"

While still shaking my head at this crazy idea, I checked out Baroque music from the library, got our Fisher-Price tape recorder (remember, it's 1988) and started recording. Two hours later, and after numerous "tear-my-hair-out" interruptions from children and phone calls, I had it done: a short ten-minute recording.

But after returning to D.C., doubts started pulling my chain. From listening to my recording for a few days, my head starting telling me: "Get real Ann. Your husband only makes $25,000 and you think you're going to make $20,000 in a single month? Besides... look at your track record!"

Maybe I should lower the amount to, say, $5,000. Except, the thought of re-recording my creed...it would be a nightmare. So I came up with the perfect solution: I would say "$5,000" out loud each and every time I heard "$20,000."

What's this...day-dreaming and Alpha states?

This worked for about two weeks. Then something happened that pulled me up sharp...even scared me. I was driving to the store, supposedly listening to my creed. But when the recording ended, I suddenly realized that I hadn't paid any attention to it. My mind was way off someplace else.

I'd been day-dreaming.

To my dismay, I hadn't focused on my goals at all. Fearful that I was backsliding, I decided that I needed help. I remembered that Leo Weidner had listed his phone number in the back of the report. So I called him, even though I'd never talked to him before. In a sheepish tone, I said something like:

"Hi Leo. You don't know me from Adam, but my dad is a client of yours. At his
suggestion, I've written a creed. But after listening to it for several weeks, I'm having
trouble focusing. I become distracted. Do you have any suggestions?"

Leo then asked if I'd followed the instruction of recording my creed to Baroque music. I said that I had. "Good," he responded. "It doesn't matter if you're focusing or not because the "super-learning" music helps to take your words to your subconscious by putting you in the meditative state of Alpha." (Say that again?) While it was way too deep for me, Leo assured me that it would work-even if I daydreamed. Phew!

Wait for it...a million-dollar business!

So I forced myself to stop saying $5,000. And instead, every day for the next ten months, I continued to listen to my voice saying..."$20,000."

And you know what? During the month of November of 1989, my wassail business made...wait for it...$19,800!

My confidence boosted, I decided to record another creed. Except, this time I recorded $100,000. (In fact, my husband wanted me to double it.)

And you know what, we were both wrong.

Within three years, we were in the wholesale business, selling tens of thousands of bags. We became a staple at the gift markets and gourmet food shows, along with distribution to over 2,000 stores, nationwide.
